The transmission of property and assets from one generation to another materialized during the late Middle Ages in two specific moments in the lives of people. First, a series of donations usually took place on the occasion of the marriage of any sons and daughters. This first transfer was completed at the end of each individual’s life, according to a series of wishes expressed in wills. From the observation of a set of Valencian wills and codicils, dating from the end of the medieval period, this paper shows how the transfer of wealth was organized, what goals or aspirations were expressed by the testators, and what level of conflict the inheritance carried with it, establishing relationships between socioprofessional testators and conflict in succession. |
