This paper analyses the different documentary sources, both oral and written, used by the English traveller Henry Swinburne in his book Travels through Spain in the years 1775 and 1776 (London, 1779). It covers his main references to Spanish, English and French literature, focussing especially on the outstanding influence of Don Quixote; the book’s etymological and historical sources, both classical and contemporary; and finally two highly significant modern testimonies. One is the translation of an anonymous text written by a Spanish officer describing in detail the navy’s failed landing in Algiers (1775). The other includes a detailed description, provided by an Irish merchant settled in Spain, of the different types of «barrilla», a plant that was highly appreciated and productively exported at the time. |
