Descripción: Chikungunya is a mosquito borne crippling disease caused by CHIK Virus, an alpha virus. After recovery, about 12% Chikungunya patients have reported for the development of chronic arthritis which persisted for several weeks or monthsinthe affected individuals. Conventional allopathic treatment includes mostly non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs to which the patients have given poor and short lasting response.Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) is a steroid and gets converted to 25-OH Cholecalciferol by the liver enzyme 25-hydroxylase. In the deficient state of vitamin D3, human body shows malabsorption of calcium ions and in turn bones become fragile and pliable. Serum samplescollected from chikungunya patients who had chronic arthritis as postchikungunya symptoms was tested for 25-OH Cholecalciferolleveland all the samples were reported for its deficiency. All such patients were prescribed FDA approved 25-OH Cholecalciferol (60,000 IU once in a week) followed by daily dosage of 25-OH Cholecalciferol (500 IU) and Calcium (500 mg).Significant improvement was reported from patients with respect to joint pain and fatigue. Serum deficiency of 25-OH Cholecalciferol in all patients was unique and the research is useful for planning chemotherapy of chikungunyapatientswithdifferent perspective. The issue is still open for scientific understanding of the problem.
