| Descripción: | This paper discusses the massive and continuing internal displacement of what are primarily ethnic minority populations in eastern Burma. The region is one afflicted by decades-long civil wars, militarized politics, large-scale human rights violations, and overall human insecurity. The paper examines the historical context of this largely conflict-driven tragedy and considers the political, economic and social dynamics contributing to the current displacement crisis. It takes note of the varied survival strategies victims employ to alleviate their predicament and ends with a discussion of the regional and international forces affecting socially dislocated areas and the difficulties involved in moving toward real solutions. |
