Hemispheric, synoptic and regional-local scale metereological conditions associated with the occurrence in Chile of two debris flows with catastrophic consequences are described. in both events high intensities and large spacial variability were observed. in the antofagasta case, which occurred at dawn on June 18, 1991, the convective development of a frontal disturbance was produced by the release of potential instability. in the second debris flow, that affected especially the City of Santiago during the morning of may 3rd, 1993, the convection developed through the release of conditional instability. The regional-local elements that favored the release of instability in each case are described, including estimates of the return period of the most characteristic meteorological elements. In the hemispheric and regional scales it is shown that both episodes developed in the general context of anomalies associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. In the case of Antofagasta, the extraordinary extension ti the subtropics of the anomalous heating of the tropical troposphere, characteristic of the mature phase of ENSO events. SE DESCRIBEN LAS CONDICIONES METEREOLÓGICOS, DE ESCALA HEMISFÉRICA, SINÓPTICA Y REGIONAL-LOCAL ASOCIADAS CON LA OCURRENCIA EN CHILE DE DOS ALUVIONES CON CONSECUENCIAS CATASTRÓFICAS. EN MABOS EVENTOS LAS PRECIPITACIONES MOSTRARON ALTAS INTENSIDADES Y UNA GRAN VARIABILIDAD ESPACIAL. EN EL CASO DE ANTOFAGASTA, OCURRIDO DURANTE LA MADRUGADA DEL 18 DE JUNIO DE 1991, SE PRODUJO EL DESARROLLO CONECTIVO DE UNA PERTURBACIÓN FRONTAL POR LA LIBERACIÓN DE INESTABILIDAD POTENCIAL. EN EL SEGUNDO ALUVION, QUE AFECTO EN ESPECIAL A LA CIUDAD DE SANTIAGO DURANTE LA MAÑANA DEL 3 DE MAYO DE 1993, LA CONVECCIÓN SE DESARROLLO POR LIBERACIÓN DE INESTABILIDAD CONDICIONAL. LOS ELEMENTOS DE ESCALA REGIONAL-LOCAL QUE FAVORECIERON LA LIBERACIÓN DE LA INESTABILIDAD SE DESCRIBEN EN CADA CASO, ESTIMÁNDOSE LA PROBABILIDAD DE RECURRENCIA DE LOS ELEMENTOS METEREOLÓGICOS MÁS CARACTERÍSTICOS. EN LAS ESCALAS HEMISFÉRICAS Y REGIONAL SE DEMUESTRA QUE AMBOS EPISODIOS SE ENMARCARON EN EL CONTEXTO GENERAL E ANOMALÍAS ATMOSFÉRICAS ASOCIADAS CON LOS EVENTOS EL NIÑO-OSCILACIÓN DEL SUR (ENOS). EN EL CASO DE ANTOFAGASTA SE DESTACA LA EXTRAORDINARIA PERSISTENCIA DE UNA ANOMALÍA POSITIVA DE LAS ALTURAS GEOPOTENCIALES EN TODA LA TROPOSFERA AL SUROESTE DEL EXTREMO AUSTRAL DEL CONTINENTE. EN EL EPISODIO DE SANTIAGO, EÑ ASPECTO MAS RELEVANTE FUE LA EXTRAORDINARIA EXTENSIÓN A LOS SUBTRÓPICO DEL CALENTAMIENTO ANÓMALO DE LA TROPOSFERA TROPICAL CARACTERÍSTICO DE LA FASE MADURA DE LOS EVENTOS ENOS. |
