This study is centered on the figure of the so-called “Adulterous Woman”, located in the south portal of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Although it seems evident that this work was installed in the tympanum in a scarcely orthodox manner —proof of which are the mutilations it suffered— and it is difficult to establish its relationship with the principal theme (the Temptations of Christ), it has integrated— itself into the sculptural group, as demonstrated by the art historians who have managed to carry out a coherent reading of this relief within the ensemble. The idea that the piece served as a “backdrop” for a portion of the marriage ceremonies carried out “ante ostium templi” is defended here. |
