In the course of the last thirty years, research on the Islamic pottery of the Iberian peninsula has expanded spectacularly, both quantitatively and qualitatively, spurred on as much by the renewal of historiographical issues as by the multiplication of excavations, both rescue and research. For the early Middle Ages the results have brought new elements for the solution of complex historical problems (processes of acculturation, development of exchange networks, relationship between urban and rural, transfer of technologies and the control of markets, State propaganda, etc.). Is such a real revolution in our knowledge possible in the ceramology of the medieval Maghreb? What can we expect to learn from the methodological experience of al-Andalus ? And what information can we hope to gain from the research taking in place in the Maghreb itself in order to form a more global picture of the two shores of the Western Mediterranean?. Au cours des trente dernières années, les recherches sur la céramique islamique de la péninsule Ibérique ont connu un saut quantitatif et qualitatif spectaculaire, impulsé tant par le renouvellement des questionnements historiographiques que par la multiplication conjoncturelle des fouilles d’urgence et des programmes planifiés. Pour le haut Moyen Âge, les résultats obtenus ont apporté des éléments de solution à des problèmes historiques complexes (processus d’acculturation, développement des réseaux d’échanges, poids relatifs de l’urbain et du rural, transfert des techniques et contrôle des marchés, propagande d’État, etc.). Cette véritable révolution des connaissances est-elle possible aujourd’hui dans le domaine de la céramique médiévale maghrébine ? Que peut-on y attendre, du point de vue méthodologique, des expériences acquises sur al-Andalus ? À l’inverse, dans le cadre d’une prise en compte globale des deux rives de la Méditerranée occidentale, quelles informations est-on en droit d’espérer des recherches menées actuellement au Maghreb?.
