Descripción: Se pretende realizar a través del análisis crítico una defi nición de geografía que se adapte a la concebida por la Maestría en Docencia de la Geografía y las Ciencias de la Tierra que actualmente es impartida en el Núcleo Universitario “Rafael Rangel” de la Universidad de los Andes. En ese sentido se hace necesario llevar a cabo una revisión de las diferentes escuelas del pensamiento geográfi co y la percepción que cada una de ellas tiene sobre el término. Se logra establecer el carácter multiparadigmático, multidisciplinario y transdiciplinario de la ciencia geográfi ca, enmarcado dentro de la concepción espacio- temporal del quehacer geográfi co. Se considera igualmente la globalidad de los conocimientos dentro del desarrollo sostenible y sustentable de las sociedades. Por último se trata de establecer el punto de contacto entre la geografía y las ciencias de la tierra, sin que ello signifi que una escisión de estas áreas temáticas.

A defi nition of geography, through critical analysis, that fi ts the one designed by the master program in the teaching of geography and earth science currently tanghy in the núcleo universitario “Rafael Rangel” of the Universidad de Los Andes, therefore it is necessary to carry out a review of the different schools of the geographyc thought, and the perception that each has on the term. Thus, being able to establish the multiparadigmatic, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary nature of the science of geography, framed within the concept of space. Time geographical tas kit is also considered the totality of knowledge in the sustainable development of societies. Finally, it comes to establishing the interface between geography and earth sciences, without this meaning a solid of this subject area.
