Universidad de Los Andes Maestría aosuna@ula.ve The teaching of English as a foreign language in Venezuela's basic
education has been within the framework of a traditional paradigm for a long
time. This conductist manner of developing the education has affected its
development in a negative way, and specifically in the area of foreign languages.
This situation has brought many researchers in the field to seek new alternatives
that would benefit learners of foreign languages.
The present study was carried out using an ethnographic model of
investigation, which consists of a description of the social and cultural behavior
of an individual or a group by means of a systematic process of observation.
The following study proposes the development of English as a foreign language
within the principles of the Whole Language philosophy as proposed by K.
Goodman (1989), as an alternative to the teaching and learning of English within
Venezuela's basic education.
The main objective of this study was to investigate about the teaching
strategies and the required setting to promote the teaching-learning process of
English as a foreign language within Venezuela's basic education. Moreover, this
study also deals with the importance of the use of authentic material within this
process. This study was conducted during the school year of 1997 and 1998,
using students from three sections at a venezuelan basic school. The planning
of the english lessons included the design of "Thematic Cycles", as proposed by
Alwertger and Flores (1991). Following this, a pedagogical intervention was
realized throughout the school year in which the participants of this study were
involved in different activities that were planed using the principles of Whole
Language, with the use of authentic didactic material.
The interpretation of the data collected from this study suggests that those
students who are involved in a process of learning and teaching, where authentic
materials (realia) are used and where the teacher works following the principles
that sustain the philosophy of Whole Language, can develop the english language
in a efficient manner. The results that were obtained are encouraging and from
them, an innovate proposal for those who wish to be succesful in the development
of English as a foreign language in Venezuela's basic school system is
presented. |
