Descripción: Unlike most rodents, the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) is born with its eyes open. It has been claimed that most of the functional and structural maturation of the retina takes place in utero. In fact, to our knowledge, no study has specifically examined if there was a postnatal maturation of the retina in guinea pigs. The aim of this study was to determine whether the retinal development of the guinea pig continued after birth. The results showed that both photopic (cone) and scotopic (rod) function continue to develop after birth, the former taking more tune to reach maturity than the later.
