The object of this investigation was to obtain certain fundamental information on the question of a possible lignin-carbohydrate union in wood and the nature of same. It has been a matter of speculation for some time as to whether lignin is combined with carbohydrate materials inwood and as to the particular type of carbohydrate involved in the linkage and the nature of the latter, assuming its existence. A review is given in the historical section of previous important work concerning the relationship between lignin and carbohydrate constituents of plant materials; also of present knowledge of the various chemical constituents of woody fibres and of their structure with special reference to the position of these various constituents. Evidence relating to a possible chemical combination of lignin with one or other carbohydrate constituent is discussed. Consideration of the material presented in the historical section leads to the conclusion that the linkage, if any, between lignin and carbohydrate material in woody fibres must be of a relatively weak character. The evidence submitted would seem to indicate the polyuronide hemicelluloses rather than cellulose as the carbohydrate material most probably involved in combination with lignin. [...]
