Plato's Republic is essentially an ideal Republic. It is ideal in the sense that a rational polity would be in accord, when once established, with perfect knowledge and would resemble the divine pattern. Yet this abstract republic has its roots in two sources. It depends ultimately on a analysis of human nature and a conception of being. Thus in Plato natural and ideal factors are considered as being mutually interdependent, so far as the conception of the ideal Republic goes.[...]
