Descripción: The first isolation of free living nitrogen-fixing bacteria by Winogradsky and Beijerinck stimulated the attempts to assess the importance of non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation in the nitrogen economy of the soil. Most non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation investigations have been concerned with agricultural soils because of their economic importance. Very few studies of nitrogen fixation have been done with woodland soils, of a virgin nature, which might contribute more to our knowledge of soil processes than would those under cultivation.
