Purpose: Quality certification helps companies to improve efficiency and performance. The aim of this study is to analyze the differences between certified and non-certified hotels regarding the implementation of quality management practices, the performance and the competitive advantage, and the changes in organizational structure. Design/methodology/approach: The paper classifies the hotels in two groups: quality certified and non-certified hotels. It then examines the differences between both groups. Findings: The findings show that certified hotels develop quality management practices in a higher extent, achieve better performance levels and a differentiation competitive advantage, and have higher levels of formalization and interdepartmental coordination. Originality/value: The contribution of the paper is to analyze if quality certification adds value for the hotel industry. Objeto: La certificación en calidad puede ayudar a las empresas a mejorar su eficiencia y sus resultados. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las diferencias entre los hoteles certificados y no certificados con relación al desarrollo de prácticas de gestión de la calidad, los resultados y el tipo de ventaja competitiva que suelen desarrollar, y los cambios en la estructura organizativa.Metodología: El trabajo clasifica a los hoteles en dos grupos, hoteles certificados en calidad y no certificados, y analiza las diferencias significativas entre grupos.Aportaciones y resultados: Los resultados muestran que los hoteles certificados desarrollan en mayor medida las prácticas de gestión de la calidad, alcanzan mejores resultados empresariales y una mayor diferenciación y tienen niveles altos de formalización y de coordinación interdepartamental.Originalidad/valor: La principal contribución de este trabajo es extender las asociaciones encontradas al sector hotelero español y ampliar los resultados de los estudios previos sobre certificación en hoteles al incluir variables no tenidas en cuenta en estos estudios como son la ventaja competitiva y las características del diseño organizativo. |
