Descripción: The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the maximal oxygen pulse increased following a one month phase II cardiac rehabilitation exercise program. Thirty-four subjects were assessed and divided into four groups: MI beta; MI no beta; CABG beta; and CABG no beta. All patients received a treadmill test pre- and post-training. Healthy sedentary adults were also tested to compare the values of normals to the cardiac patients. The data was analyzed for differences occurring in cardiac patients as a result of training in maximal oxygen pulse, oxygen consumption and heart rate. The data was also analyzed for a significant difference between post-training values of cardiacs and that of healthy sedentary adults. The percent training improvement was calculated and analyzed for training differences occurring between groups. As a result of training, significant improvements were seen in all four groups from pre- to post-tests values in maximal oxygen consumption and oxygen pulse but not in maximal heart rate. No significant training improvements occurred between cardiac groups. The values of the normals were significantly higher from the post-training values of the cardiacs in all parameters. The results of this study suggest that cardiac patients can improve in maximal oxygen pulse and, therefore, the efficiency of the components within the cardiorespiratory system (stroke volume and a-vO2 difference) following a one month endurance training program.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306
