56-72 camilomoron@gmail.com semestral Within the dimensions of magic, in the wealth of symbols and correspondences
found there, is where the woman cuts her silhouette from the background of
permanent and profound meaning. She is at once the evocation of nature, in
that she is a life generator, and yet at the same time she represents destruction,
madness and death as part of the essential duality that attaches itself to the human
psyche. She is known as Jamashia, Icaque, Arca, Sayona, Dientona, Witch, Anima
Sola, Maria Lionza—femininity showing clearly the traces of the metonymy
inherent to mythical thinking. She is the via oppositionis, epitomizing the quality
of bringing opposites together within a single subject, the capacity of uniting
the one with its contrary, of passing from concept to concept, alluding in her
passage to an infinity of ideas—the embodiment of magical thought. The eternal
feminine springs from the pristine fount of the collective imagination. In the
Venezuelan milieu, the feminine has collected around herself a coterie of images
that constitute and reconstruct themselves in the crucible of our nation’s history.
In this essay we pass in review a selection of these images in accordance with
the data and pertinent artefacts provided by archaeology, ethnology and ethnic
history. |
