Descripción: En esta investigación se aborda el análisis científico-técnico de un territorio en la cordillera de los Andes de Mérida, Venezuela, que a partir de los 2800 m (3000 m) y hasta los 5000 msnm, contiene al ambiente y la vegetación de páramo. El páramo, de acuerdo con LUTEYN (1999), se ha reportado dentro de las regiones tropicales y ecuatoriales en territorios como México, América Central y América del Sur, África, Malasia, incluyendo Nueva Guinea y Hawai, y es definido como un tipo de vegetación que ocurre entre el límite superior continuo de vegetación o línea del bosque cerrado (conocido como timberline), y el límite superior de vida de las plantas, es decir, línea de la nieve perpetua. En estas franjas de territorio la “Vegetación de Páramo” está caracterizada por la dominancia de formas vegetales que han evolucionado bajo la presión e intensa acción de factores climáticos, los cuales a su vez están acentuados por el gradiente altitudinal. Las vertientes andino lacustres y andino llaneras, así como el piedemonte de la cordillera de Mérida, completan nuestro escenario de trabajo. En este contexto se abordó la propuesta de evaluar la bioclimatología y establecer los pisos bioclimáticos y de vegetación. Con este gran objetivo se desarrolló toda una labor que implicó la revisión de un volumen substancial de información básica, así como las actividades de campo para obtener datos propios y generar información válida a usar en el estudio planteado y desarrollado en esta tesis. A partir de la definición y delimitación del espacio de trabajo y del objetivo perseguido, se emprende la faena de revisión de las características del territorio, los usos actuales del mismo, la flora, la vegetación potencial, la climatología, la geología, la geomorfología y los suelos, la revisión de las propuestas biogeográficas más actualizadas para la región y su confrontación con los datos propios de esta investigación, el análisis bioclimático de la información de la franja objeto de estudio, la definición y delimitación de los pisos bioclimáticos, el estudio físico-químico de los suelos de la zona de páramo, la elaboración del catálogo florístico, la definición de la propuesta de vegetación en la zona paramuna de la Sierra de la Culata y el Pico El Gavilán, y por último, la descripción de El Paisaje Paramuno.

This research deals with a territory scientific-technical analysis on the Andes Cordillera in Mérida, Venezuela, having a páramo environment and vegetation from 2,800 (3,000) meters to 5,000 meters above see level. According to LUTEYN (1999), the páramo has been reported in the tropical and equatorial regions like México, Central and South America, Africa, Malaysia, including New Guinea, and Hawaii and it is defined as a kind of vegetation occurring between the vegetation continuous upper limit commonly known as the timberline and the plant line upper line (permanent snowline). On these land strips, the “Páramo Vegetation” is characterized by the dominance of vegetable forms that have evolved under the pressure and the intense action of climate factors, which are increased by the altitudinal gradient. The Andean slopes facing the Maracaibo lake and facing the Llanos, as well as the Cordillera de Mérida piedmont complete this research work scene. The proposal of establishing the bioclimatology and the bioclimatological levels and vegetation in this context was made. With this great aim, a whole work that implied the revision and analysis of a great amount of basic information, as well as field activities to obtain proper data and generate valid information to be used in the thesis proposed was developed. Parting from the definition and delimitation of the work space and from the aim pursued, the territory characteristics, its currents uses, the flora, the potential vegetation, the climatology, the geology, the geomorphology, and the soils revision tasks were undertaken, as well as the revision of the most updated biogeographic proposals for the region and its comparison with this research proper data, the bioclimatic analysis of the information of the strip to be studied, the definition and delimitation of the bioclimatic levels, the soil physical-chemical study in the paramo area, the floristic catalog elaboration, the definition of the vegetation proposal on the Sierra de la Culata and the Pico El Gavilán páramo area, and at last, the Páramo Landscape description.
