Descripción: Despite rapid advances in medical knowledge, the alimentary tract still presents a clinical problem. Complaints referable to this system are, it is recognized, among the most common of clinical symptoms, and frequently the most baffling. Thus, while the pathologist recognizes a variety of intestinal lesions, cases which reach autopsy represent only a fraction of patients with digestive complaints. Similarly, the Roentgenologist and the surgeon often cannot demonstrate a cause for digestive symptoms. To the internist falls the unhappy task of treating that large number of patients with gastro-intestinal disorders lacking any apparent organic basis.[...]
