Descripción: Opinions on the subject of thyroid gland growth have long been divided, with various authors taking diverse stands. Fredric Thomas in work on human thyroids in Belgium observed an increase in the size of the follicles with age. He explained this as resulting from the fusion of small follicles to form larger ones, providing therefore for a subsequent decrease in the number of follicles present. On the other hand Bargman summarized the reports indicating that new follicles appear by budding or constricting off from existing follicles. Bizzozero expressed the belief that all thyroid cells were present in the gland at birth and that no new cells were formed. Therefore all follicles would be constructed from these cells and subsequent growth would be due to enlargement of these existing cells. To our knowledge, no significant quantitative work has been done to substantiate these views. It was planned in this work to establish conclusively by quantitative methods the mechanism of post-natal growth of thyroid tissue. It was desired to learn whether growth of the gland is due to an increase in follicle size, formation of new follicles, or a combination of both. If it is a combination, then to what extent is each process responsible for increase in the gland size? It was thought that by accurately measuring sufficient numbers of follicles in normal animals of various ages and applying mathematical corrections to the inherent histometric error, accurate values would be obtained.
