Descripción: El peso al nacer es un indicador esencial para vigilar y evaluar el estado nutricional in-fantil y materno. El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo conocer el peso del niño al nacer en la Maternidad Isidro Ayora durante el segundo trimestre del año 2009, conocimiento necesario para medir tendencias de la situación en la que na-cen los niños ecuatorianos. Esta medida fue correlacionada con los antecedentes ma-ternos (edad y paridad) y las características del recién nacido obtenidas mediante exa-men físico realizado posterior al nacimiento (Talla, PC, APGAR, EG). El tipo de estu-dio que se realizó es de tipo cohorte descriptivo con datos obtenidos en el registro del Departamento de Neonatología de la Maternidad. Los niños que fueron incluidos en el estudio son todos aquellos que fueron atendidos en la Maternidad durante el segundo trimestre del 2009, muestra que representa el 26.4% de los nacimientos totales entre enero y noviembre del año mencionado.
Weight of newborn is an essential indicator to watch and evaluate the neonatal and ma-ternal nutritional state. The present investigation has as objective to determinate the tendency of weight in the newborns attending in the Maternidad Isidro Ayora during the second trimester of 2009. This knowledge would be necessary to measure tenden-cies of the situation in which the Ecuadorian children are born. This measurement was correlated with the maternal antecedents (age and parity) and some newborn characte-ristics’ obtained by physical examination realized subsequent to the birth (height, head circumference, APGAR, gestational age). The type of study realized is descriptive co-hort with data collected in the Register of the Department of Neonatology in the Ma-ternidad. The children who were included in the study are all those were attending in the Maternidad during the second trimester of 2009. The sample represents 26.4% of the births attending between January and November of the mentioned year.
