O movimento empreendido por décadas em favor da amamentação depara-se com a necessidade de impedir essa prática para mães portadoras do HIV. O objetivo deste estudo foi o de compreender o significado consciente, atribuído por mulheres soropositivas à experiência de se verem impedidas de amamentar o filho. Entrevistamos 15 mães HIV+ atendidas em um Centro de Referência de Diagnóstico e Tratamento da AIDS. Utilizamos a Teoria Fundamentada nos Dados e o Interacionismo Simbólico como referenciais teórico e metodológico. Os resultados demonstraram o dilema e o drama das mulheres que se entristecem pela negação do peito, mas compreendem a importância de não amamentar convivendo com a incerteza do futuro, para si e para seus filhos. The movement undertaken during decades, in favor of breast-feeding, is now faced with the necessity of impeding this practice by HIV-bearing mothers. The objective of this study was to understand the meaning that a HIV positive mother attributes to the experience of being unable to breast-feed. We interviewed 15 HIV positive mothers attended in a Reference Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of AIDS. We used the Established Theory on Data and the Symbolic Interactionism as theoretical and methodological references. The results reveal the women’s dilemma and drama, who are saddened by the denial of breast-feeding experience but at the same time they understand the importance of avoid breastfeed their babies in the circumstances and try to deal with the uncertainty of the future both for themselves and their children. El movimiento emprendido por décadas a favor del amamantamiento, se depara con la necesidad de impedir esta práctica a madres portadoras del VIH. El objetivo de este estudio fue comprender el significado consciente, atribuido por mujeres VIH positivas a la experiencia de verse impedidas de amamantar a su hijo. Entrevistamos a 15 madres con VIH + atendidas en un Centro de Referencia de Diagnóstico y Tratamiento del SIDA. Utilizamos la Teoría Fundamentada en los Datos y el Interaccionismo Simbólico como referenciales teórico y metodológico. Los resultados demostraron el dilema y el drama de las mujeres que se entristecen por tener que negar el seno a su niño, sin embargo comprenden la importancia de no amamantar conviviendo con un futuro incierto, para sí misma y sus hijos.
