| Descripción: | This article examines the works of Innis and McLuhan as founders of a current of communication thought whose central feature is to consider media as both objects and vectors of explanation. It shows how Innis’s conception of the medium is related to the notion of bias, which articulates a materialist view of communication processes with an original conception of history. The formalization of Innis’s concept can show how McLuhan builds on this conception of the medium, while introducing new elements. The approach of media as extensions provides a new interpretation of materiality and can develop the problem of the medium as technology and of its relationship to the human mind.Cet article analyse les oeuvres d’Innis et de McLuhan en tant que fondatrices d’un courant de la pensée communicationnelle dont la caractéristique centrale est de considérer les media comme objets et vecteurs d’explication. Il montre comment la conception innisienne du medium est liée à la notion de biais, qui articule une vision matérialiste des processus de communication avec une conception originale de l’histoire. La formalisation du concept innisien permet de montrer comment McLuhan s’appuie sur cette conception du medium tout en y introduisant de nouveaux éléments. L’approche des media considérés comme des extensions donne une nouvelle interprétation de la matérialité, et permet de développer le problème du medium en tant que technologie, et de sa relation à l’esprit humain. |
