| Descripción: | Abstract: Pragmatic objectivity, the normative theory set forth in Stephen Ward's The Invention of Journalism Ethics, argues that good journalism requires the "diligent application of fallible methods over time" (2004, p. 292). This article reads The Globe and Mail columns of Christie Blatchford as a practical example of pragmatic objectivity. Blending complex ethotic appeals with straightforward reportage, these columns constitute a kind of hybrid genre, which gives Blatchford scope to construct herself as reliable even as she concedes that reportorial objectivity in the traditional sense is impossible. Her writing on Canada's mission in Afghanistan, however, is problematic. Aware that being embedded with the military risks undermining her rhetorical ethos, Blatchford nonetheless seems unable to turn the resources of the hybrid genre to her advantage.Résumé : L'objectivité pragmatique, théorie normative élaborée dans The Invention of Journalism Ethics de Stephen Ward, soutient que le bon journalisme requiert « l'application diligente au fils du temps de méthodes faillibles » (2004, p. 292). Cet article évalue les chroniques de Christie Blatchford parues dans le Globe and Mail comme exemples pratiques d'objectivité pragmatique. Ces chroniques, combinant èthos complexe et reportage direct, constituent une sorte de genre hybride. Elles permettent à Blatchford de se présenter comme fiable tout en admettant que l'objectivité journalistique dans le sens traditionnel est impossible. Ses écrits sur la mission canadienne en Afghanistan, cependant, sont problématiques : dans ce cas, bien qu'elle soit consciente qu'être embarquée avec les militaires risque de miner son èthos rhétorique, Blatchford semble incapable d'utiliser les ressources du genre hybride à son avantage. |
