| Descripción: | A short history of an artifact: In the summer of 2005, Mary Bryson made a short video about her Queer Women and the Net research project (http://www.queerville.ca), without ever having met Mél Hogan. There, Mary made illustrative use of Mél's website (http://www.nomorepotlucks.org), where information was posted about various kiss-ins organized in response to homophobic violence in Montreal. Mél got in touch with Mary early in 2006 to request her participation in an interview conducted to fulfill the course requirements for a Masters-level Research Methods class in the Communication Studies Department at Concordia University. Mary didn't just get a set of really interesting questions to think about concerning her research, but unexpectedly met the very person whose activist use of the Internet she had featured just a few months earlier. It seemed only fitting to respond in an appropriately mediated fashion. Mary proposed to make a short, low bandwidth video. Mél showed the video in her class. CJC Editor, Kim Sawchuk was the course instructor, and proposed posting the video to the CJC website. The production values of the video are poor. In lieu of cleaning up the quality of the video, it seemed more sensible to provide a transcript.La courte histoire d'un artefact : Au cours de l'été 2005, sans avoir rencontré Mél Hogan, Mary Bryson a réalisé une courte vidéo sur son projet de recherche Queer Women and the Net (http://www.queerville.ca). Dans cette vidéo, Mary a utilisé le site Internet de Mél (http://www.nomorepotlucks.org), qui contenait de l'information sur plusieurs « kiss-in » organisés pour contrer la violence homophobe à Montréal. Plus tard, au début de 2006, Mél a invité Mary à participer à une entrevue dans le cadre d'un cours de maîtrise sur les méthodes de recherche au Département des Communications à l'Université Concordia. À cette occasion, Mary a non seulement pu identifier plusieurs questions intéressantes à explorer par rapport à ses recherches, mais elle a aussi eu la chance de rencontrer Mél, celle-là même qui était à l'origine de l'utilisation militante de l'Internet qui l'avait intéressée quelques mois auparavant. Mary a alors proposé de réaliser une courte vidéo afin de répondre aux questions de l'entrevue. Mél a montré cette vidéo en classe. Kim Sawchuk, éditrice du CJC et également professeure de ce cours, a proposé d’afficher la vidéo sur le site du CJC. La qualité de la vidéo étant faible, au lieu de tenter de la retravailler, il a semblé plus logique d’en fournir une transcription. |
