Abstract: In this paper, I examine the impact of the media on social change in a new light by investigating the effect of the circulation of information on various groups of people in which society has a keen interest. I call these groups of people social kinds, the categories used in the social sciences to gain knowledge of people and their behaviour. Changes in the behaviour of those under study may contribute to social changes in unexpected ways. Further, the examination of social kinds raises, in a fresh way, issues of mass media responsibility regarding the production and circulation of information. The focus in this paper is on the issue of teen pregnancies and parenting, a pressing social problem in Canada and the United States.
