Í ritgerðinni er merking þjóðartáknsins Þingvalla útskýrð og hún sett í samhengi við íslenska þjóðernishyggju. Færð eru rök fyrir því að merking Þingvalla sé hvorki sjálfgefin né óbreytanleg, heldur tengist hún tilurð íslenskrar þjóðernishyggju, sjálfstæðisbaráttunni og sjálfsmynd þjóðríkisins. Umræða um Þingvelli er sett í samhengi við hugtökin staður minninganna, minnismerki, sögulegt minnismerki, arfleifð og sameiginlegar minningar. Líta má á Þingvelli sem byggingu eða kirkju sem þjónar sem vettvangur pílagrímaferða og helgileikja þjóðríkisins.The purpose of this paper is to analyze the meaning and construction of Thingvellir as an Icelandic national symbol. The paper will argue that the meaning of Thingvellir is neither self-evident nor static, and is related to the evolution of Icelandic nationalism, the struggle for independence from Denmark and the identity of the Icelandic nation-state. The paper places its discussion of Thingvellir in the context of concepts such as realms of memory, monuments, historical monuments, heritage, and collective memory. Thingvellir can be likened to a church or building which serves as a pilgrimage destination and as a site for the nation-state’s ritual ceremonies. |
