/s), temperatura (20, 25 y 30°C) y
fuente de carbono (ácido acético y sacarosa) sobre el crecimiento y la producción de H2;
producción H2 (p H2 production in microalgae via photolysis takes place only under anaerobic conditions
because the Fe-hydrogenase - enzyme responsible for H2 production - is sensitive to the
oxygen (O2). The objective of this research was to study the effects of environmental
conditions and removal of the photosynthetic O2 on the growth and H2 production in
microalgal cultures. To this end, the research was divided into three phases: A)
bioprospection of five species as H2 producers: Chlamydomonas gloeopara,
Chlamydomonas mexicana, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Chlorella vulgaris and
Scenedesmus obliquus cultured under sulfur deprivation and autotrophic and
heterotrophic conditions; B) determination of the effects of the irradiance (100 and 400
µE/m2
/s), temperature (20, 25 and 30°C) and source of carbon (acetic acid and sucrose)
on the growth and H2 production; and C) determination of the effects of reducing agents
(ascorbic acid, cysteine, sodium sulfite and hydroquinone) on the concentration of
photosynthetic O2, growth and H2 production in cultures provided with sulfur salts.
The results of bioprospection show that the highest H2 productions were obtained under
heterotrophic conditions: S. obliquus (74 mL H2/L) > C. mexicana (62 mL H2/L) > C.
gloeopara > (30 mL H2/L) > C. reinhardtii (26 mL H2/L). Based on these results, S. obliquus
and C. gloeopara were selected to perform the following tests. The irradiance - but not
temperature - has a positive effect on the growth and H2 production (p < 0.05). The highest
H2 production for C. gloeopara and S. obliquus was observed at 25°C - 100 µE/m2
/s with
73 mL H2/L and 54 mL H2/L, respectively. The source of carbon has a significant effect on
the growth and H2 production (p |
