| Descripción: | Concurrent Engineering (CE) Design relies heavily on the use of integrated computational software systems to reduce the overheads involved with information retrieval, presentation and transformation and the provision of decision support to improve product quality and performance. This paper discusses the development of an integrated Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE) system intended to support the full development of composite components for the aerospace industry from client specification to tooling design. Two of the main bottlenecks to successfully developing more generic KBE systems are in the design of adequate problem solving models and in the subsequent knowledge engineering phase of the process. Standard knowledge engineering methods do not account for the situatedness of knowledge and rely too heavily on the domain expert’s ability to account for the relative nature of the knowledge being transferred to the system. A promising way forward is suggested by a knowledge acquisition method referred to as Ripple-Down Rules (RDR). This technique allows for the incremental development of knowledge bases while the system is in use. |
