Ten women of various ages pose in a stately home for this snapshot of what appears to be a book group or reading society. The specific name or occasion for the photograph is unidentified, but several women are holding books. The room has a distinctive archway and patterned wallpaper. The women are wearing dresses typical of late 19th century middle class fashion, including several dresses with distinctive 'leg o'mutton' sleeves. 'Williamsburg friends' is written on the back of the photograph in one of three different unidentified hands.
