| Descripción: | A study of the alimentary canal in relation to feeding habits was carried out in Catla catla (Ham.). The gut content analysis and the estimation of the relative length of the gut (R.L.G.) of the fish were also done for different length groups. A high degree of positive correlation was observed between gut length and total length of the fish. The fish was found to be omnivorous, mainly subsisting on vegetable matter, algae and microcrustaceans. With the increase in length of the fish, the quality of vegetable matter increased in the diet of the fish. The average of R.L.G. calculated was 5.77. The pattern of mucosal folds in the different regions of the alimentary canal was also studied |
