Descripción: Fry of the air-breathing freshwater catfish Clarias batrachus (mean weight 7.0 mg) were reared on four isonitrogenous diets (crude protein level on dry basis 48%) for 8 weeks. Growth and feed utilization of fish fed with the formulated diets were compared with those of control groups fed on a natural food of Tubifex worms in freeze dried form (42% crude protein level). A formulated diet containing fish meal as the major protein source was found to be the best of those tested; eg., net weight gain was found to be the highest (405 mg) accompanied by least conversion ratio (1.73) and best protein efficiency ratio (1.20). The whole body tissue protein (N x 6.25) content registered an increase from an initial of 65.5 to 71.35% at the termination of experiment. Feed consumption (mg dry matter intake per day) was also maximum in this treatment group.
