Descripción: | Introduction: Evidence based practice (EBP) is recognised as critical to quality healthcare. Evidence suggests that barriers exist that prevent nurses from engaging in EBP. Barriers include inadequate skill and knowledge in accessing and critiquing evidence, and negative attitudes towards research and research utilisation. Little research has examined the development of attitudes and skill in EBP in pre-registration students. This study aims to examine student attitudes and perceptions in a rural Australian university context, ascertaining if participation in knowledge development and skill acquisition in the processes of EBP leads to changes in attitude and increased intention to use research in practice. Method: This study consists of three stages. Stage one employed a pre and post survey design of pre-registration nursing students enrolled in a unit of study aimed at developing beginning knowledge and skill in EBP. Stage Two will consist of focus groups with students who have participated in the unit. Stage Three involves a second distribution of the same survey to these students at the completion of their pre-registration course. Survey data collected from Phase one was analysed using descriptive and comparative statistics, identifying differences and significance between pre and post surveys. Survey items relate to demographic characteristics, sources of knowledge used to inform practice, utilisation of research in practice, and views regarding values and relevance of research. Results: This presentation will focus on presenting the preliminary findings from Stages One and Two. Stage Two will occur in June/July. Conclusion: Findings from this study will help to understand students’ attitudes and orientation to research at the beginning of their studies and will inform curriculum and pedagogical activities to enhance research utilisation and EBP across the pre-registration program. It is hoped that students will be better equipped and have a positive view of research as new graduates, thus creating a stronger culture of research in the workplace. |
