Descripción: In recent years significant advances have been made in the assessment and management of children’s pain when they are hospitalised. However despite these advances, studies and reviews continue to indicate that pain management strategies, particularly procedural pain management in emergency departments are poorly managed and unfortunately, children continue to suffer needlessly. The predictive nature of procedural pain provides an excellent opportunity for health care professionals to minimise the pain, fear and anxiety experienced by children by intervening appropriately before, during and even after the procedure with developmentally appropriate distraction techniques. This paper will discuss the role of distraction in reducing pain, fear and anxiety during medical procecdures and examinations and outlines the successful implementation and evaluation of ‘distraction boxes’ into rural emergency departments throughout Hunter New England Health Southern Sector. Key words: Pain, Children, Procedures, Distraction
