The term ἀναβολή was used by literary criticism of comedy against the late fifth-century dithyramb. It received diverse interpretations yet in ancient as well as in modern times. My contribution is intended to clarify: 1) the possible origins of some of the confusions in interpretation applied to the term in antiquity and transmitted into the present; 2) its possible meaning, on the basis of testimonies which – like the one of the pseudo-aristotelic Problemata – establish a relation between the dithyramb and other poetic genders of the late fifth-century b.C., the citharodic νόμοι and the tragic monody.
