This doctoral thesis presents the life stories and endeavors of 19 Spanish emigrants that came to Guatemala on the
XX century, which constitutes a representative sample of individuals. It describes thoroughly what they did for
the development of Guatemala. This work investigates and documents these life stories of Spanish emigrants that
came to Guatemala during the first seven decades of the XX century and makes visible and tangible their personal
and collective contributions in the fields of economy, education, science and arts, as part of the history and
evolution of Guatemala. This study tries to understand and describe how the processes in the life stories chosen
for the sample were unfolding, and which results were obtained in the long run. At the same time tries to offer
tribute to these Spanish emigrants that gave priceless contributions to the development of Guatemala. To reach
this purpose there was a broad study of the theory and history of the Spanish migrations in the XX century and
their contributions all over America and the usage of a research technique named in depth biographical interview,
that gave the study a qualitative tool for sociological research and a comprehensible description of the life stories
of the selected sample. Esta tesis doctoral muestra la vida y obra de 19 españoles que llegaron a Guatemala en el siglo XX y que son una muestra representativa de lo que en su conjunto hicieron los españoles por Guatemala y por América. Además, se investigan y documentan estas vidas, para hacer visibles como parte de la historia y evolución de Guatemala, sus aportes personales y colectivos en las áreas de la economía, la educación, la ciencia y el arte. Asimismo, este estudio pretende comprender cómo fue el proceso evolutivo de dichas historias de vida, a través de un análisis cualitativo de las mismas, y así dejar evidencia de los aportes obtenidos a largo plazo y el impacto que éstos tuvieron en el desarrollo de la Guatemala del siglo XX. Al mismo tiempo, se pretende rendir tributo a la trayectoria de vida de estas personas. Para lograr este propósito, se realizó una aproximación teórica a la historia de las emigraciones españolas de finales del siglo XIX y durante el siglo XX y el impacto que estas tuvieron en los países de acogida, especialmente en América y Guatemala. Para el análisis efectivo y una apropiada recopilación de datos, se utilizó una técnica de investigación denominada la entrevista biográfica en profundidad, que otorgó al estudio una plataforma extensa y cualitativa para abordar sociológicamente las vidas de esta muestra seleccionada de españoles que vinieron por diversas causas a asentarse en Guatemala. |
